Laptop repairs

I run a PC retail and repair outlet.  Desktops are easy to repair, having largely common standard components.  Laptops however are another matter.

They do have some common components, ie: hard drives and memory.  Optical drives used to be unique, but now increasingly share a common format, albeit with different cosmetics. Motherboards understandably are model unique, but the biggest anomaly is displays.  Why should a LG 15” TFT have a different connection interface in a Compaq than in a Toshiba? If the internal cables in a desktop can be standardised, why not the ribbon cable connecting a screen to the motherboard on a laptop?

A common screen problem is Inverter failure.  This is a small inexpensive component that handles the screen backlight.  Failure results in a dim display.  Why can this not be standardised?  Why does Compaq for example insist that you buy a new screen/inverter package when only the Inverter (roughly £20 ) is faulty?

I have a collection of faulty laptops with perfectly good screens that could be used to repair other laptops with faulty screens or inverters.  If the above issues were addressed by laptop manufacturers,  (apart from screen sizes)  the 2nd hand screens in those units could be used to economically repair others.

Why would I want to use 2nd hand screens instead of new ones?  A 15” TFT monitor costs typically £130  The same screen (minus its casing) for a laptop will set you back about £250!  Add the labour and VAT and the repair cost can easily exceed £300!  Inevitably, faced with a bill like that the customer abandons his computer and invests the money in a newer better model, adding to the pile of faulty laptops!

In view of the WEEE directive and environmental concerns, and the pockets of consumers, Laptop manufacturers pull your corporate fingers out!

Mission Computers

PS.  When reviewing Laptops it might be worth mentioning the availability of parts for repair.  Retailers brands like Time & Tiny & Advent, nearly impossible, and in Advent’s case (PC World) ridiculously expensive!  SONY –  Unobtainable!!  They refuse to supply any parts, not even a keyboard!

Do you have a LTN121XU-L01 replacement screen for a Samsung MV8000 Laptop?

Posted by: Fiona | 22 Jul 2006 00:48:08

Hi Friends.
I WAS the proud owner of a Sony VAIO VGN-A517b. Late one weekend afternoon, myself rather tired and working casualy in our livingroom on my pride and joy I foolishly place my comforting cup of hot chocolate on the table just as my two children come running in playing "tag" - or was it "let me poke you in the eye"? as they do. The result ... totally DEAD Laptop that smells of hot chocolate - Oh Woe is Me. I have to laugh or else!!! I have no anything. No charging lights, no ON, no Hum or fan or HDD activity. Totally DEAD. I presume major short out at power-in socket and/or battery terminals. Any sensible ideas greatfully received. Thank you all and keep your machines chocolate free!!!

If you are having power issues turning on.
Try to unplug the power.. then take the battery out. Then hold the power button down for approx 10 seconds, then put battery back in, then plug power in, and try to hit power button again to turn on.
It worked for me when a GNER train blew my internal power hub.

I'm saddens me to hear so many tales of woe but I am not surprised, if you will all buy terrible brands like advent and sony. These companies seem to have an active disdain for sustainability, one of the many reasons I recommend my customers avoid them. If you want a laptop it's possible to repair get a Lenovo (ex IBM) thinkpad.. they're the landrover of the laptop world, you can always find cheap spares* for them (or scrap machines you can salvage them from) and they are the ONLY laptop manufacturer who still publish FULL SERVICE MANUALS for all their models.

Personally I think all hardware OEMs should be legally compelled to provide service manuals, drivers and system recovery CD images to anyone who wants them in order to try and stem the flow of poisonous PCBs into the worlds landfills!

Yours,

Roger Heathcote

* A friend of mine once trod on my 240x shattering the screen, I fixed it with a scrapper of ebay for under £40.

Hi Johan

It's not possible to do this unfortunately. Instead put it on eBay. If the screen is good, you'll undoubtedly get some reasonable money to put towards your new desktop screen!

Hi Wrighty

The backlight problem could be caused by a couple of issues, but you'll be glad to know that neither of them result in you having to buy a new screen!

The most likely cause of your backlight failure is failure of the inverter. This is the board which provides between 300-1000v to power the backlight in your screen. Replacement MUST be with the same model otherwise you risk damaging your motherboard.

The other candidate is the CCFL which is the tube which actually provides the light for your backlight. This can be replaced, but only buy an experienced professional as it involves the dismantling of the actual LCD unit. It is ver easy to irreparably damage the screen if done incorrectly.

We carry out these repairs and much more at www.cambridgelaptoprepair.co.uk. If you would like to pop along, we would be more than happy to help you out.

Best regards

Wow this is a long page ;-)

I don't know if this has been mentioned but here goes...it may help a few potential working things from getting scrapped.

Many have said that their laptop still does not show a display on an external screen, as well as on the built-in one. This is a common thing i find, but....

It's 50/50 if this means your laptop is broken. Its a common belief that plugging external screens in directs the picture to there, but - on many computers (laptop or desktop) this does not do an automatic change. Some do, some dont, some must be booted with it attached, others will switch over even when running, some must have keys pressed, some have BIOS settings to control what does what
Unless it's a laptop you know very well, take nothing as 'standard'. Press the buttons (usually pictured keys for use with the FN key), and see if it changes results.
Be carefull of 'sleep' keys tho!!! incase you cannot get them to wake up again, maybe from BIOS passwords, or just bad design (i have 4 DELLs with that problem).

For those seeking out screens (and inverters etc.), all you need is matching parts. The screens used on laptops and TFT monitors, are the same things, but there are 100's (probably 1000's??) of models. If the numbers don't match exactly, it will do odd things. Some even get as little as a very slight 'shimmer' as the frequency is off, others do nothing.

Oh, and i do agree with the original posting - some way of these parts not getting wasted should be done, so we are not manufacturing 1000's of items that are also being thrown away. I too, have over 50 screens here, all need testing & passing on in some way. I could do with building a workshop here ;-)

Good Luck everyone.

I have a sony vaio vgn-n38e that almost always goes blue screen for various reasons when start up on battery and very occasionally on mains start up. A new battery has been supplied to no effect.Any suggestions. Could it be hard drive, motherboard, memory etc or Vista program itself ?????
Be grateful for any help

sony vaio vgn-n38e we see many blue screen problems with this model caused most by faulty memory.

The usual cause of blue screens on the n38e is either faulty RAM or overheating CPU http://www.trilogicuk.co.uk
