Wanadoo's manual makes Livebox network setup a mystery

Broadband has just arrived in the town in southern France where I live, so I signed up with Wanadoo broadband and walked out of the shop with a Livebox.

There was a simple guide to settting up the WiFi connection to my laptop. But then the difficulty started; I bought a new desktop to run the printer, scanner and iPod etc. The new machine runs well (so far!) and getting it on-line was relatively easy using an Ethernet cable; but then the fun began – I wanted to network the computers, so that I could print from my laptop, and load e-mailed pictures from my laptop into my desktop.

Could I get them to talk to each other?  No. The full Livebox manual on CD might have had the answer, but I couldn’t understand it. As I lay in bed, the horrible thought flashed through my mind that I had taken a Livebox assuming that it could network, when it did not.

So next morning it was time to search the Internet; it did become clear that Liveboxes would network, but that there were two varieties. And it had something to do with addresses; there were lists of numbers but no clue as to what you did with them. Eventually, of course, I found the answer, but it took until early afternoon.

I found that I needed to make adjustments to the addresses used by the computers themselves. Simple when you know how, but not intuitive.

I do think that a piece of kit on retail sale that does network should at least put you on the right track as to what to do, even if it is not the kit itself that needs setting up.

Comments

We agree with your comments that consumer products should be easier to set up.

We've had several readers comment on the Livebox on our Test Bed blog, and none so far have been positive. See http://labs.pcw.co.uk/2005/03/wheres_the_cust.html

We're testing the Livebox at the moment, and will run the various comments we've had past Wanadoo for a comment.

I tested the Livebox and found that while I could get all PCs on the network connected to the Internet, it was tough to get the PCs on the network to talk to each other.

Sometimes it would work, but usually it would not. I tried various fixes, including using Microsoft's Wireless Network Wizard, pinging all the PCs on the network (they all saw each other), ensuring all the software firewalls were off (the Livebox has a firewall), etc, but to no avail.

In the end, I replaced replaced the Livebox with an alternative router and I've had no problems since with my network.

If you have a wireless router available, it's easy to replace the Livebox, even though Wanadoo has given the set up a proprietary feel.

You'll need your Wanadoo setup details - password and username. You'll also need to delete the Livebox installation, otherwise the new router won't work properly (I tried swapping in the new router without deleting the Livebox, but experienced reliability problems until it was deleted).

You can still use the wireless access card, but have to fool it a little. When you delete the Wanadoo software the drivers for the card are deleted. The way around this is to ensure you already have an alternative connection to the Internet (eg, via an Ethernet cable), get online and then plug the access card into the USB port. When it looks for the driver, allow it to look online and it will download and install the driver within a few seconds.

Just to balance my comments, I've had no problems at all with the actual broadband service, which I've found impressive. What disappointed me was the Livebox router that came as part of the package.

For those that don't have a replacement router - and many people won't - we'll contact Wanadoo and ask them why people are having these problems, and how to resolve them.

I got a livebox from wanadoo and spent the last five days trying to network my computers, in vain. In the mean time I spent hours phoning their technical, which is basically useless and not healthy for my bank balance. What was my dream has become my hell. Finally, I have given up and is now waiting for the end of my contract to look elsewhere.I have a year to go ,as I started my contract just two weeks ago. However, I would be grateful if someone can help me networking on the livebox. Thank you.

I'm using the Livebox and have 5 PCs running on my home network.

I did have a lot of trouble getting it to work initially. In the end I turned off the software firewalls I had running, and used the firewall in the Livebox.

This seemed to solve the problem as the network now works fine. And I've not had any security problems either.

heya im getting the live box.what shall i do to get it all set up and ready to go?

thanks sa

It comes with really easy to follow set up instructions.

It's pretty hard to go wrong initially. It only gets harder when you make it the hub of your home network.

I has a portable with a WIFI & I installed the Wandoo livebox plugged in their portable WIFI adapator into USP port. Stupid probably but I'm relatively clueless and therefore am asking for help. I got the connection up but now my portable WIFI no longer works without the Wandoo adaptor plugged into the portable. What should I do, please

Thanks

I am waiting for my second live box replacement having received 5 recovery discs, the first one was blank and the rest the wrong ones. When we asked why they sent us the first version we were told they had a lot of these left, even though thye didn't work.

yo, tonight ive managed to randomly get hold of a wanadoo livebox from my dad, and it also just so happens that my mum's gone boardband with wanadoo (starter package)... hmmm... im gonna do some networking. any chance someone could post/email me a copy of the manual for starts?? sounds like it could be a bit of a headache trying to setup this bitch up. and if anyone has any advice that'd be wicked.

Dear All, I'm now 4 months into my contract with Wanadoo and I'm still having the horrendous trouble of setting up a network with 2 home P.C's. The upstairs PC is the main comp and the downstairs is the one I'm trying to hook up via a network. What if I just bought another inventel wireless usb connector - would that solve my problem and connect both P.C'S to the internet? And then I could just send files via msn messenger that way?!

Just got a livebox today.
Why will my laptop not connect to it via wireless. keeps disconnecting and connecting alternately every few seconds. i have set up wep in network connections but this still goes back to original settings. My desktop is fine.

anyone know where i could download the drivers for the livebox to set it up again. was a nightmare first time rd but now ive got a virus on my laptop so i need to set it up again, only ive lost the installation cd

My Biggest problem was NOT pressing the button when setting up my WIRELESS computers. The button is #1 underneath, next to the USB port and Button #2.

I am now trying to use Video Conferencing with the LiveBox..

I'm having no joy trying to connect a Sony SZ1XP laptop via its integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network card (driver issue 10.1.0.15). XPSP2 sees the available Livebox network OK but sticks at the "Acquiring network address" stage with the "Obtain IP Address automatically" ticked in the Wireless Network Com2 Properties Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) tab (even after telling it to repair the setting. ) Wanadoo supply their own USB adapter which connects OK and an ethernet cable which works OK with this laptop but I want to connect without cables!
It might help someone to help me if I give the Network Connections details of the USB adapter which works-
On the SUPPORT TAB it reports "Assigned by DHCP" together with the IP address and other major values given below on the DETAILS page

Physical Adddress:00-0B-6B-AO-34-0B
IP Address 192.168.1.11
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.1
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server 192.168.1.1
DNS Server 192.168.1.1

I tried entering the ip address and other values manually for the inbuilt Adapter and sure enough the icon on the taskbar reports an excellent connection but when I try to connect to any website I get "server not found". After talking to Sony for hours and trying allsorts they concluded that it is Wanadoo's fault that I am unable to surf with their adapter. Wanadoo insist there must be a problem with the Sony or XP settings after trying various ideas. So hence this posting! Is there a clue to what needs changing in the USB adapter connection values? Wanadoo insist that the only way it will work is if the "obtain IP address automatically" box is ticked.
I have tried the MS Hotfix suggested elsewhere in these postings.
I am able to alter the Wanadoo settings held in my account on their Server but a visit to look at the possibilities discourages me from going this route just yet as the BB service is working OK apart from the Sony Laptop. Thanking for any suggestions in advance.

I'm struggling to connect my new laptop via its integrated Intel wireless LAN card. The laptop can see the Livebox network OK but sticks at the "Acquiring network address" stage with the "Obtain IP Address automatically" ticked in the Wireless Network area. Wanadoo supply their own USB adapter which connects OK but I want to connect with my internal card not a laptop with a adapter hanging around.
Please help!! Is it the laptop?

I've just ordered Wireless from Wanadoo , already have BB with them. Can someone tell me what I need, it stated that I need a wanadoo wireless adaptor, cant I just get a cheaper one as theirs is £35! and do they supply any at all?

I`ve been with Wanadoo for a few years now. Yesterday i changed my package and thought i`d order a Livebox while i was at it. After doing some browsing, i`m wondering if it was such a good idea. I currently use a Belkin F5D7632-4 ADSL modem/wireless router/4port ethernet hub combo. I have 2 pc`s and a ps2 wired to the hub. Another pc and ps2 are connected using a Belkin F5D7330 wireless bridge/access point. Also have a Belkin F5D7000 wireless-g PCI card(which can cause older pc`s to crash). Have had no problems with network, sharing or broadband.

However, it seems that by using Livebox i`m shooting myself in the foot. I`ve heard nothing but bad things about the Wanadoo kit. Alot of peeps saying "cant connect!". I have noticed one thing on the website which says the Livebox is only compatible with Intel CentrinoTM wireless technology. Hmmmmm.

Wanadoo dont like being told their equipment is rubbish so they are as useful as a chocolate teapot on these matters.

Posted by: Andy | 27 May 2006 11:47:30

I received my livebox today. Within 2 hours it was set up and ready to go. I`ve used a linksys 5port network switch to connect 2 pc`s and a sony ps2 directly to the livebox. A 3rd pc is connected wirelessly using a belkin F5D7330 wireless bridge/access point. Everything works ok and all at the same time. pc`s can communicate with each other and online gaming is ok. All i did was rename the livebox and change the WEP to that of my old router. Taa Daa!!!! Jobs a good one.

I have not found where the download link might be for the wireless adapter.

I have another computer not on broadband yet and I need to find the actual driver for download. The other computer previously had netgear on it, and that completely messed up the file systems so the wnadoo disk wont load up the drivers at all.

to make a wireless and ethernet computer connected to the livebox talk to each other there is a section in the livebox admin pages called 'bridging' you have to add 'eth0' and the wireless one (not sure what its called - should be obvious) into a bridge. it should be clear what to do once you're there, i can't remember it off the tp of my head.

I had problems setting up my neighbours Livebox. It got stuck at the stage of acquiring a network address. I eventually got it to work by adding an IP address in the alternate configuration tab on the wireless connection.

Click on the wireless connection icon by the clock > Click the view wireless network button > Select the option on the left to change advanced settings > double click on the internet protocol (TCP/IP) > ensure the options are set for obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS automatically > select the alternate configuration tab and select the user configured radio button > Enter an IP address in the DHCP range of the Live box. Make sure you enter you Default gateway and DNS.

When it try's to acquire a DCHP address it will time out like normal and then use the alternate configuration IP address which should then connect it to the wireless network.

The only problem that might arise from this is duplicate IP addresses on the network but can be sorted by going into the alternate configuration and changing the IP address. I think there was quite a big IP range so if this does happen I'll be surprised!!

I recently got a broadband subscription from Orange (formerly wannado) and it came with a livebox with I setup with ease (I didn't use any of their internet browsing software, just installed the box and setup with windows). I can't however use Skype with this livebox, I had no problem with my old dialup connection. I'm pretty sure it's to do with the ports in the livebox but I don't have clue where to start, has anyone else ahd this problem and been successful in solving it?

I had a problem with my Livebox 'acquiring network address'. After several hours of searching the Internet and trying all sorts of things ot resolve the issue I found that the most important thing was that the WEP key is CASE SENSITIVE. Once I put the key in in capitals it all worked immediately!

Have been trying to get full connection since July. Gone through problems with extensions and have plugged Livebox into the main phone line downstairs with computer upstairs on Netgear Wireless Connection. My problem is that it will connect on initial switch on, can surf for between 10-15 minutes and then it says "Cannot Find Server" even though all the icons at the bottom right hand corner says that the wireless connector status is very good and that it is connected to Wanadoo. If I switch off and then back on about 60% of the time it will come back up. Tempted to go back to Dial Up so fed up. Luckily not paying for this as it has come as "free " with my mobile package. Spent £70 for Microtechs to visit - was working when they left, but then they weren't on it for longer than a few minutes. Will not re-visit, say that their job is considered done. Paid £35 for Netgear connection, so not exactly free!

Have connected ok to Livebox on main computer, but have bought my son a laptop which said it was wireless enabled, does he still need a wireless adaptor as we cannot get it to find the network at all?

Karen - You may need to "pair" the laptop with the livebox. press button 1 on the livebox to activate "pairing mode"

I was very excited to receive my Livebox as i have a desktop PC which holds all my main files etc and a Notebook which I wanted to use via a wireless connection to my Livebox for the internet.
Once I had figured out how to achieve this (and don't get me wrong, it's not perfect yet but ok)I wanted to link the PC and to Notebook so I could share files. I ran the Windows XP home network setup wizard on both PC and notebook but nothing! there is no connection between the two at all and I have just about given up.
If anyone anywhere can shed some light on how to do this(and I know it can be done) I would be eternally grateful.

Many thanks
Grant

If you are trying to connect multiple PC's to your livebox and many of you on this blog appear to be then go to the admin function on the configure livebox icon on your desktop. Click access to conf pages Type admin and admin then select security and wireless connection, then change to channel 2 the default is channel 1 which only talks too the USB wireless card. Then install the software on your other devices whilst they are wired using a network cable directly to the livebox. Get through to loading the WEP key and save it then your install is complete. Everything should work fine I have 6 PC's connected to my Livebox. The only problem I now have is still cannot network them together despite them all being routed through one box. Can anyone fix this problem?

I am also having major problems getting a wireless connection to my Livebox. Internet works fine with Ethernet cable, however when trying to pair the livebox with wireless card (Belkin)it just sits there trying to acquire IP addresses. Orange helpline useless!! They say they can only advise when using orange wireless card at cost of £35! Card works fine with other network routers so contcted orange suggesting problemn with wireless rounter within Livebox- still awaiting replacement box. Hoever having read all other comments it sounds like that is not the problem. Can anyone advise on what to do. Thanks

all you have to do is click on "configer the livebox".

you will be asked for username and password just put in admin for both. you will then be able to change the livebox settings

I've just moved into a house which has Wanadoo BB and want to connect my desktop to it using a Belkin USB adaptor. Livebox is downstairs, my computer is upstairs. Altho the adaptor has found the Wanadoo network it is not connecting to it. I've tried going thro the Belkin software & the XP networking wizard - neither works. Does the landlord need to do anything to his computer to make it happen?? I've got the WEP code, but am not 100% sure of what the 'Network Name' means. It is driving me crazy and I need help asap!!!

Hi, looking at getting one of these but in the orange spec it says connect up to 6 computers using wireless technology. I need to conect 5 wired computers, and 5 further wireless ones, plus connect to a wireless hub in another part of the house. I'm worried that the livebox maybe restricted to allocating 6 IP addresses and that i wouldnt be able to get my whole network connecting to the broadband supply. has anyone managed to connect more than 6 devices? thanks

Posted by: Tom | 25 Oct 2006 15:30:46

Ian, you say you can't get your PCs to talk to each other - what security software are you using?

I tested the Livebox for a long time for PCW (had two die in 18 months so now use an alternative instead) and found that it blocked PCs networking.

If using paid-for security software you may be able to set it up to allow your machines to talk to each other. Try turning off your software firewalls on a couple of PCs, leave them on and see if they then network (make sure they are still connected to the same home network). It should be safe as there is a built-in firewall in the Livebox.

If they do, then go into your software firewall and see if you can set exceptions that allow your machines to communicate. If it still doesn't work with the software firewall switched on, then you can run your PCs using the router's firewall only and this should protect your computers still. After my second Livebox died I swapped in a new router and the firewall problem went away.

I phoned Wanadoo (in the pre-Orange days) and asked why so many people had this problem, but they never came back with an answer.

I had major issues with the livebox from Orange who have now bought out Wannadoo. Obviously Wannadoo were too wannabee and couldnt hack being a decent service providor, and Orange have now inherited all their duff equipment. Networking 3 machines in the home proved a task too far beyond what the Livebox is capable of. It just couldnt happen. Numerous calls to 0870 and weekends wasted I thought blow this for a game of soldiers and bought a linksys WAG54G. I had this connected up to the internet and networked 4 machines over secure wireless with absolutely no problems along the way in 15 minutes.

Surely the livebox should be called the DEADBOX??? LOL much happier now I threw it in the bin!

Posted by: Mark | 13 Nov 2006 19:17:22

Hey,

Orange didn't buy out Wanadoo they were simply rebranded. They are both owned by a company called France Telecom. They rebranded from freeserve to Wanadoo because people thought that they would get free internet access due to the name, then they rebranded from Wanadoo to Orange because of bad public image or having poor hardware etc. and Orange having very good customer service and image, but now all it is doing is tarnishing Orange's name, which personally I think is wrong. I used to work for wanadoo in a call centre on their collections dept and the amount of F**k ups that happened on their part was unbelieveable.

I have experienced similar problems with my Livebox trying to create a wirless bridge and cannot find the option any where. I have asked Orange and they said that they "Don't support this feature so cannot say". So I have emailed Inventel directly asking them. I also have had the problem with Acquiring Network Address, and am finding it very frustraiting and have emailed and spoke to them several times to no avail, sometimes the rep can barely understand English (which doesn't help!).

When I used to work for them when the Livebox first came out they had loads of problems with it, and looks like they still are!

Please help if anyone knows how, or has any feedback on what I have said.

PS if you need to ring Orange look on this site for their geographical or freephone number (UK Only) www.saynoto0870.co.uk

I have had a livebox for a couple of years now and haven't had many problems really, until, I moved my desktop PC out into the garage (not my decision chaps...;-)) and want to pick up the wireless from the house where we have 2 laptops working off it wielessly no worries. It is only about 15 metres/49 feet and it can't pick it up. Thers's a window and 1 brick, garage wall between. Even with all other devices off, it won't pick up. The software, USB adapter and everything works on the PC with the livebox, it just seems to be the distance which is a little pathetic seeming as they say it can reach at least 30 metres. Anyone had same problems??

Yeah well in order for me to set up my wireless internet connection i have to buy a $120.00 xp windows re installation cd because error reports keep showing up and stopping me from installing it...what a terd !

I have recently installed a livebox, and had some of the difficulties outlined in this forum. Going through the forum and reading the comments posted did give some ideas on solving the problem and I thank you all for that. Initially both my desktop (Via LAN port) and my laptop (Via Wireless) would talk to the internet but not to each other. I have McAfee Security Suite on the desktop and Norton Security suite on the laptop. When I looked at the Incident logs, they reported that they had blocked pings from the livebox. On both systems I opted to make the Livebox a trusted IP address. From there on in the laptop and the desktop could see one another, so it was a matter of sharing the printers and files in the usual way. I still have not mastered all the setting of the livebox itself yet and Orange support don't seem to know much about it iether.
I hope my comment help a bit more in going wireless and not hairless.
Regards

Harry

Just took me 4 hours to fix up a live-box.. The WPA is CASE SENSITIVE, stupid mistake in the firmware somewhere, because the initial autorisation passes, the case sensitivity prevents you from getting a network address through DHCP.
The username and password for the router is admin admin, the home page should be 192.168.1.9, but for some reason mine starts with 192.168.1.109. You can get the home page by going to "my network places" and double clicking on the router symbol as UPNP is active by default. On the advanced tab of the router home page you can change everything you'd like. Except Network briding, for this you;ll have to buy your own modem router I suspect.

I have a netgeear system in my place, only trook 15 mins, was completely automatic.

Hi,
Just stumbled into this site as I got my Livebox today and, wait for it ... I couldn't set it up.
Only trying for a WIRED connection, but the software side of the installation is not running.
I'm running Norton AV and Internet Protection, with a disable firewall and Windows XP own firewall is also disabled (always is).
Really would like to know if anyone's had a prob with their CD-ROM on instal?
Is Norton the culprit (what should I do?)?
Pls let me know if you can help. Ta

Hey I had the same problem with my CD and when I clicked on install for the first time, it just opened up a help file. SO I phoned the helpline and they helped me install it manually (its just typing a few numbers, but I had to wait for hours to get through). I only have windows firewall and still have Mcaffe installed but its definitely the CD.

I now want to connect a printer using the livebox's USB port but Orange doesn't offer support yet...anyone know how?
I just tried plugging the printer in but nothing happened and I don't wanna buy a print server just for this.

I have livebox connected to desktop pc through ethernet connection and a laptop connected to the livebox wirelessly but am trying to set up network so Pc and laptop can share files. Tried doing it through network set-up wiz but to no avail. Workgroups set up and laptop 'sees' pc but wont let me access it. ...\\file not accessible, blah, blah, blah. Network path not found. Would it be worth buying a wireles adaptor for he pc? would this be any use anyway? Help before I chuck em both out the window.

For those of you having trouble with the Livebox installation CD, a word of advice: The CD uses Flash but, for some reason, the latest version of the Flash player screws up when running the Livebox installation.
I uninstalled Flash player 9 and reverted to version 8. The CD then worked fine. Hope this might work for you.

I have had exactly the same problems as everyone on here. I got my livebox and tried to connect my brothers netgear wireless pci card on his desktop to the livebox, it was connecting and saying there was a signal but would either start searching for another network or just not actually let internet explorer connect to the internet. After much frustration and a case of complete trial and error i have it sorted, so i dont know if this will help any1 else, but when your annoyed, you'll try anything. On the livebox config settings, under security, click low to disable the firewall and on the wireless connection change the channel (i changed mine to 12) and double check the key is correct. Under Config click advanced and then wireless, and change the pairing time to infinate (which is just two hyphens --) and then let the settings change. As i say, i dont know if it can help anyone else, but its worth a try. My brother is happily surfing away right now, havent had a chance to try and network them together to share files etc. but i'll try later on.

Well heres my story.
Im in the UK. I has wanadoo broadband for 3 years and had zero issues in that time.Boom email came in the futures bright with orange., Sign up for max broadband and unlimited telephone, That was september last year. I was meant to be on 6 meg. im on 1.1, I was meant to have free telephone calls, Thats NEVER worked.
It really has taken countless telephone calls to get anythng resolved. Im still awaiting a resolution.
PS. This is the worst customer service i have ever had. Advisors can be simply rude, managers arent much better.
Futures bright? is for a company that has zero service and cant fix faults.

I had the same problem with the install cd just showing the help file - emailed Orange from their website and within a few hours they emailed me the IP address and user name / password for the router so i could set it up manually. Once I put my internet user name and password into the router (eg user.fsnet.co.uk@fs) by using the menu on the left hand side (once logged into the livebox) I could access the internet and network my laptop, desktops, 8 port hub and network laser printer and have not yet had a problem (touch wood). Default IP address is 192.168.1.1 - user is admin and password is admin. Would suggest you change the password and assign your unique wep address though (if using wireless). I have the 8 port hub connected to the yellow ethernet port with 2 desktops and a laser printer connected to it, my laptop connected through wireless using a d-link dwl-g650+ pcmcia card and a desktop pc connected through the red ethernet port. Hope this helps someone.

Hi
Just setup friends WANNADO wireless.

2 Printers 1 PC 1 Laptop

PC hardwired to router on internal network. Windows Firewall off.
Let Lappy find router configure WIFI to details from Router using their WEP.
Reboot all working.
Can fileshare and print to Network printer.

Now random disconnects, which I am going to explore this weekend.

Hated Freeserve when it came out the most intrusive software I know used to refuse to uninstall. Wannado not much better, now Orange but using Freeserve hardware and software.
Will keep you posted, will prolly go for, Non DHCP and BT's DNS Servers and all n the same Sub-net.

Hello all, after alot of phone calls.. we finally got our orange box working today, If you are trying to connect with a router, we had that exact same problem. If you type "192.168.1.1" then go onto your routers administration menu, and change the "Local IP Address" to "192.168.2.1" then it should all work with a router. I had the exact same problem and we spent over 6hours trying to do it. Hope this helps!

Posted by: Joshua | 23 Mar 2007 18:14:48

After struggling with one of these beasts today I finally twigged that they are supplied with the wireless networking misconfigured. The software says the preinstalled key is WEP, and the unit is pre-set to work with WEP and WPA. However I could not get it to connect until I changed the security settings to WPA only. Once that was done, it was dead easy

Posted by: Demdike | 26 Mar 2007 23:44:20

I finally had another go at networking one of these today and had success! Since I know people have had problems doing this I thought I would share the solution I found after lots of digging on the net! My main PC is connected to the box via the ethernet cable, so if it doesn't work via this method, then try connecting one computer using the ethernet and see if that works.

First, make sure your livebox is running the latest firmware, to do this you need to enter the livebox configuration pages. This is done either from the installed programmes, or by opening a browser window and typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. The default username and password are both 'admin' and are both lowercase. PLEASE make sure you change the password while you are in the configuration pages. Find the link to update the livebox and then close the pages. There should be no need to alter anything else in there, my other settings are all at default, well, except I have the firewall set to low and have DMZ configured on it for some games I play. Wether this has played a prt in it I dont know, so try it first without lowering the firewall or enabling DMZ.

If you already run a pc using the ethernet cable then as per the original instructions you probably have it connected to the yellow port. Take it out and connect it to the red one instead. Dont ask me why but for some reason it works.

Now you just need to run the wireless network wizard using the computer connected via the ethernet cable. This is just a matter of following the instructions. Once you have run the wizard on all computers using the USB disk/floppy whatever written from the Main base it should all work. Just turn on file sharing on each file you want the other computers to use etc and it all runs like a dream! Anyone wants to ask a question then post it here or email me and I will do what I can to help.

Since my original post the livebox stopped network access between my pc's. I went back to just using my linksys router which supplies my internet access and wireless connection. I have recently reconfigured my network by unplugging the netgear router from the phone line and changing the ip address of the netgear router to 192.168.1.254 and i have plugged the livebox ethernet cable into the linksys router. Now the livebox just supplies my internet connection and the linksys router does everything else including my wireless connection. Since setting up in this configuration i can network all my computers and my network colour laser and have not had a problem with filesharing. It also means that i still get to make free phone calls with a phone connected to the livebox. (Livebox on 192.168.1.1 - Linksys router on 192.168.1.254 - Livebox connected to phone line using supplied cable, connected to Linksys router through ethernet cable and has the phone connected to the port on the bottom of the livebox. Linksys router connected to my existing network via 8 port hub.)

Me again,
got rid of the help window.
Edited the registry to remove mention of previous attempts.
Start-run-type in regedit---ok
click edit-type in livebox and delete what the system will let you.
Then worked through the setup only to find they have my user name on original paperwork with a doudle @fs which the system will not accept.
Contacted wana.to be told i would have to uninstall etc.
getting easier by the minute.
Now up and running with at least some idea of what to do when it goes wrong.
I have no ethernet connection on my old m/c so i bought an ethernet/usb connector.
Seems to be OK,

If it helps anyone, I used a Netgear DG384G for my brothers network. On this device he has a TV plugged in by Ethernet cable, an old desktop we use as a file server plugged in by Ethernet cable, a Netgear Print Server plugged in by Ethernet cable, and (now) his Livebox plugged in by Ethernet cable. He has two wireless laptops, an excellent HP 3310i wireless printer and the kids have a number of PSP's etc. What I did in the end (because I cannot understand what the hell pairing mode is all about) is connect the Livebox to the ADSL line direct (so my brother gets his FREE Orange internet telephone service), connect the Livebox to the Netgear by cable and then setup the devices as follows:-
In the admin pages of the livebox (point a web browser to 192.168.0.1 I seem to recall from something connected direct to the Livebox by cable and importantly BEFORE I connected the Netgear and Livebox together). Now DISABLE Livebox wireless (because we will use the (better IMHO) Netgear product). Next go to network, advanced and restrict the DHCP range to something like 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.20. Now unplug from the Livebox and plug into the Netgear. On its Admin pages you need to turn off NAT (a tick box on one of the pages at the bottom). In the LAN Setup pages, set a DHCP server range of something like 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200. Finally setup your Wireless network on the Netgear.

Now connect the Livebox and Netgear together.

What happens is the Livebox fronts the network to the Internet. The netgear gets a IP address from the Livebox, and then everything else on the network gets an IP address from the Netgear. The netgear acts as your internet gateway, passing traffic to the Livebox invisibly. Works like a dream - all his devices talk to each other - really cool watching the TV (which has a fixed IP address by the way between 192.168.0.21 and 192.168.0.99 - doesn't matter which but make yourself notes of anything you setup like this so you don't forget) find the Phillips "Media Manager" software he has installed on his laptop and then play the pictures and movies he has onto the big screen. Also, he can walk in and send a picture from his mobile direct to the printer wirelessly, etc etc.

I hope all the above is correct because its from memory, and I'm a senile old git now (lol)

If anyone wants more help try mailing me at hat@thehat-dj.com and I'll TRY to answer you (but I am a very busy person so don't take it personal if I don't reply for a while).

PS The install CD from Orange was pants coz' you need Flash player version 9 or it doesn't work (which they don't mention in the literature) - also, you have to be firm to get through to someone who will give you the admin password for the livebox - this is perfectly understandable as otherwise you'll all go on the boxes and could (I stress COULD) inadvertently muck up some settings that would prevent their help desk being able to connect to your Livebox to help you.
PPS The Orange Wireless USB device (a Speedtouch device) is not very good IMHO - it was much easier to use a less "Scaletrix" product on the laptops such as a Belkin card or a Netgear USB wireless adapter as the software supplied with these actually lets you scan for networks and attach to them in an easier fashion than the wizard driven Orange device - again IMHO and from my own personal experience

i have been using wanadoo for a few yrs with no issues, i have just moved house so decided to go with BTbroadband. I would like to keep using my Livebox as a router. Has anyone done it ?is it possible?Thank you

I live in France and man friends use the Orange Livebox and I find it an utter nightmare to set up. I use the second largest ISP here, Free, and their ADSL modem is so easy to set up via my account web pages.
It is cheaper than Orange and I get free telephone calls to 50 countries and they will stop my account with Orange so I save on the monthly line rental as well!

Just received "Livebox". When connected everything goes OK. Switch on my computer next day, "NO CONNECTION". Phone help line and re-connected. Have done this at least a dozen times. Anyone help me to overcome this problem?

Posted by: colin | 27 Jun 2007 11:52:24

Don't disconnect your internet connection? Leave it connected when you turn of your computer, then when you restart it you will connect automatically. I don’t know why anyone disconnects there computer from the internet whilst connected to the live box, No one else apart from you can access your line only you who has the prod key WPA key can access it. “it’s the safest and easiest way to connect any wireless connection. (Leave your connection connected when switching computer off)

I have a livebox, and I can network, share printers etc. It seems to be pretty simple. Have you done a firmware update?

Posted by: Oscar Key | 5 Jul 2007 17:13:41

Setting up the livebox is very straight forward if you follow the directions...

REMEMBER the button on the livebox that puts it into pairing... AND it only goes into pairing for 15 mins, after that you must push it again.

If wireless and having problems make sure livebox set to 'WPA or WEP' and try computer in one then the other.

Livebox is a wireless access point, the dumb-ass who programmed it doesnt know what a wireless bridge is! and neither do Orange tech support. what a bunch of frigging idiots.

Dont expect wireless devices to talk to other wireless devices ('why would you want to do that?' orange TS!) They cant! wireless to wired only.

It wont work till they (or someone else?? anyone please??) re-writes the firmware.

Just plug a proper grownups router into the junkbox using a wire.
Way to save the planet guys, now I gotta leave two boxes on!

I would like to second Joshua's wireless solution posted back in March: "The software says the preinstalled key is WEP, and the unit is pre-set to work with WEP and WPA. However I could not get it to connect until I changed the security settings to WPA only."
So it was just a case of going into the livebox config to change to WPA, then entering the livebox's WPA code into the wireless adaptor's controlling software and hey presto - it's now transmitting. V.Chuffed.

Hi,

I have been using the livebox from orange for 2 weeks now. I have some friends with the same box. My problem is that I am unable to access the router config on my box. I can easily do it on my freinds' box. Here on mine the page with both Firefox or I.E. just spins and eventually times out. Does anyone know why this might be?

i'v had nothing but trouble with liveboxes, i had one die and it took a week to convince the joke of a customer service team that A) i obviously know more than they do and B) that the livebox needed replacing. They actually tried claiming that there was a fault on the line so they didnt have to send me one (after 3 24hour tests had shown that there was no fault atall).

Key words: Livebox Disconnect wireless ‘few minutes’

I have read most of the above comments, and I was suffering from 2 or 3 of the above ailments, so I thought I would add my solutions, however I am not posting anything new.

System

One Toshiba laptop with internal wi-fi card
One Asus laptop with USB adapter Belkin G+

Problem: Installed Orange Livebox CD on Asus laptop. Installed Belkin software. Laptop will find the home network, but initially connects to a very weak, unsecured one nearby. Belkin software refuses to change to my home network. If I make the wireless adapter (now appears on network connections) connect to my home network, it will do so for a few minutes, then constantly disconnect/reconnect!!!

On the Toshiba laptop I installed none of the orange software, found my home network and logged on using the wep key. However this also randomly chucked me off every few minutes!!

Solution: Using a network cable I logged onto the livebox. This is at http://192.168.1.1/ with u/s: admin, p/w: admin.

I changed it to WAP encryption, to use channel 12, and my network name.

The Toshiba laptop now worked fine. (I had to re-enter the WAP key)

For the Asus/Belkin combo, I had to setup a new ‘profile string’ with the same network name as my home one, and give it the WAP key. To do this I actually re-installed the Belkin software.

Finally stopped wireless disconnecting on the livebox every five minutes or so: untick the box "the key is provided to me automatically" in the wireless properties. It worked for me.
