Sony Vaio revisited - laptop's build quality in question
I am writing this to you on my Sony Vaio VGN-FS115Z, which I bought as a result of the review I read in your April 2005 issue, where it got bot a "Recommended " and "Best Buy" award. I have previously owned a Sony PCG-X18 and felt happy to continue with the brand.
Having now owned the FS Vaio for a couple of months, I'd like to offer my experience of using the laptop.
The general feel of this machine is that it has been engineered and manufactured on a budget and it is not of the pedigree I expect from a Sony. The most irksome aspect is the two dead pixels glaring at me on the screen.
I intended to upgrade it to 1GB of memory, but both available sockets are used with 256MB chips, so I am forced to buy two 512MB chips (Sony want £338, Crucial charges a more realistic £108). I have subsequently discovered that the professional model, the VGN-FS115XP, uses just the single 512MB chip.
Other niggles include no telephone or patch cables for the integrated modem and network sockets. Accessories such as spare batteries and port replicator have only just become available.
I am now waiting to send it back for a warranty repair (no quibble) as the right hand locking catch (made of plastic and the one that operates the "lid's shut" micro-switch) has broken through the stress and strain of gently opening and closing the lid about 50 times. Only Sony don't have the replacement part in stock yet.
In short, the spec is great and I can't refute what was said in your review - technically it is spot on. But the real world practicalities of the machine seem very different from my point of view.
I accept the fast nature of the computing world, but is it possible to revisit some of the more popular of your "Best Buys' with extended use reviews?
Michael de Whalley

Bugger. I was going to buy one of these and am now having second thoughts.

I've got exactly the same problem - Sony told me their engineers are working on a fix for this problem, and can't do anything about it at the moment. Typically, the microswitch for hibernation and screen blanking are in the right hand socket, so now my laptop will not go to sleep if closed which is extremely annoying. On older vaio's these catches are a metal hoop, but on this one it is a plastic part.

guess, what!?! There is a catch with mine too, just the one mind, the right one has snapped off, after about 3 months. I'm thinking about wating to accumulate some more problems before is part with my baby. Fortunately i paid for extended warenty from PC world, I felt a mug for being conned into paing for it, glad I did though

I have the same right hand catch problem with a Vaio FS-195 - It broke 2 weeks after buying it.
Sony at first tried to charge me roughly £150 to repair it (£110 for the plastic catch!!! and £40 carriage) as it was obviously damaged by me and not their fault, but I found a couple of weeks later (via the magic of the web) that this appeared to be a common fault on this model. They then offered to take it away and fix it free of charge. I was promised that the laptop would be returned within 1-2 weeks. 6 Weeks later they have still not fixed it and do not know when they will have the parts to fix it with. I have spent a lot of time on the phone to customer services asking the simple question 'how can you not know when you will receive the parts?' Someone must know. Anyway, the most recent conversation led to them offering me a replacement unit as even Head Office did not know when they could repair mine. 'Great', i said, 'a new laptop - finally' 'errm, yes, well a reconditioned one, actually...'
Seems fair, buy a brand new laptop from Sony and get it replaced with a second hand one because they are unable to fix the new one.
I suppose the moral of story is to be careful and not be swayed by the sony bling factor if, like me, you need a laptop for work - Vaios look good certainly, but I now realise I should take a bit more notice of the message boards that talk about the kafka-esque nightmare of Sony tech support if it all goes TU. Mind you, the same may be said of IBM and dell, but I've never had an IBM or dell machine break down... just lucky, maybe?
No idea what I do now - the guy at Sony couldn't/wouldn't give me a postal address I could write to to try and resolve this problem/complain/rant. Does anyone know if Sony uk has a complaints dept? They do not answer any emails sent via their contact from on the website.
Posted by John Hutton | July 4, 2005 5:03 PM
Yep my right hand catch has also snapped off. Any idea when they will be available as I'm selling the laptop and would like it fixed or an idea of the replacement cost so I can inform the buyer.

Exact same problem, right catch broke and Sony wont do anything about it because it was obviously accidental damage on my behalf. This laptop has never left my desk!
Great Laptop, Apalling Customer Service.
Posted by Richard Varcoe | July 15, 2005 10:26 AM
Exactly the same problem. Retailer have stated they will send for repair and it will be 2 weeks. As the machine is only 4 months old this isn't good as it will probably happen again and again.

My Sony Vaio 16" Laptop is 18 months old with a broken backlight. It was diagnosed by my local computer repair shop who cannot get the parts from Sony as Sony keep them for their own repairs. Sony will replace the LCD screen for about £450 - seems like a lot of money to replace a light bulb!
Sony compliants can be emailed to support@vaio-link.com - I don't know whether they respond or not. I'm not going to buy any more Sony products.

I was Sony laptop loyal customer because of its good looking and some special design. i have bought 2 Sony laptop in 3years, however the Sony laptop made me sick. I just would like to tell somebody:Sony laptop's quality and aftersale servive are rubbish!rubbish! my opion is from my very bad personal experience.

Sony laptop is shit!

Sony Vaio hinges are an obvious weak point. After being used for a while the initial grease on the hinge wears off and the hinges become stiff. This causes the hinge to break under the extra pressure needed to overcome the hinge resistance. We as a repairer have had to import hinges from either USA or Asia when spares are needed. Often takes a few weeks.

Lucky you didnt buy a MESH computer, they send you what you didnt order and then you need to do battle to get your money back. Also the sales order numbers are premium cost, as for support its not there.
So that what I call unlucky !!!!!!!!

My right-hand catch has just gone again, on a machine that's only six months old - and this is the second time!
First time, I had to rant and rave before Sony would state categorically that they would not charge me for the warranty repair. This time, it counts as a re-repair so they haven't mentioned charging.
Arrrrgggh. I can't see it getting any better - this is going to happen every three months, isn't it?!
Posted by Roz | September 26, 2005 1:14 PM
My right hand catch has also broken and I am now wondering if I should send it for repair at all! How do I make sure they have the part in stock before I send it in?
Posted by colin upton | October 1, 2005 4:51 PM
I am having a running discussion with Sony after purchasing a Vaio PCG GRT896HP.
Ahem... I am VERY glad that I bought a 3 yr Sony warranty because the latest charade will be the 5th engineers visit in 18months!!
I have had a new processor bit, a new facia and now my CD read/writer refuses to do either!!
As far as my experience goes the backup is pants. Days if not weeks for an engineer IF and I must stress IF you can convince the telephone operator it is not a software problem!!!
I have had to wipe my laptop twice now in an attempt to convince them that I have not got the latest virus or crappy windows hiccough.
I bought Sony because it had great spec and looks and as I use it as a desktop, a large screen with great definition.
In hindsight I would have been better buying a Dell because at least they get an engineer to you quickly and the engineers have had a peek at the innards of one before!!
Loads of bits of tin foil which will not re-stick when the part has been replaced. They really cut corners and don't send new sticky foil bits. I have witnessed much muttering from the engineers while they hold all the bits on and try to screw another bit down!!
Also design wins over practicality as the components are shoe horned in with little thought for repair and the engineers have probs getting it all back in, hence having a new facia as this developed a stress fracture and the casing was so wonky the CD tray only came out when it felt like it. Getting the picture!! Nuff Said. Sony next time -NO FEAR

Same thing. Right catch broke. Laptop was replaced. Happened again 1 month later and was repaired. Was assured it would be fine. Guess what?? It has broken again for the 3rd time.
Posted by Andrew Steele | October 25, 2005 10:23 AM
I moved to the USA shortly after buying the laptop, started reading about some problems so I called sony to ask if I could buy the overseas warranty. They said no as it was 30 days after I bought it (they only allow 14. A month later the right catch broke off... Sony USA dont recognise the model and Sony UK were not interested in helping out. Three months later the dvd drive door has started to open whenever it feels like it, sometimes mid-burn sometimes when it is switched off. Bad mechanism. Anyway to top it off I have yet to pay for this thing (0% for 12 months) so that is adding to my anger. I have always bought Sony home entertainment equipment and never experienced anything like this. Customer service is non existant.

My brand new FS-295 has a CD drive that will play DVDs but after three weeks of ownership it wont read or write data. Sony support recommend using the recovery procedure (wiping everything off the pc and rebuilding it.. I asked if they were certain it would work. They replied "it might". The alternative is to ship it back and having suffered this with Sony before I realise this means losing your PC for months. My solution is to buy an external cd writer. Cheaper than paying for shipment to Sony, I dont have to rebuild my pc and - as opposed to the rubbish Sony supply it will probably work. Apart from that I like the rest of the pc...great keyboard, great screen, 100gb hard disk - but as ever TOTALLY USELESS support.

I'm having exactly the same problem with a broken right-hand catch on my Sony Vaio FS215-B after only 4 months. Sony are threatening to charge £100+ to repair it (plus £40 courier fees) - does anyone have any experience of how to convince them I'm not to blame & is there any evidence out there that it's a general design fault? Thanks

Hello everyone,
I don't want to make a new topic, so I just post my comment in here.
My problem is with my Vaio deskrop. The problem appears to be the switching problem, of which the power fan isn't turning fast enough to cool down and my computer keep rebooting itself because of over-heated. I brought it out everywhere tried to find someone who could repair it, but they all said they couldn't, simply because they can't buy any parts for Vaio desktop, and the only place to get it fixed is send it back to Sony Vaio, which I did a month ago.
Up untill now, I still haven't got any idea how long I have to wait, because Sony Vaio said they don't have the part, and they don't even know how long they have to wait for. As time goes on, I'm getting so frustrated that I TRIED to find a way to make a complaint, however, the only number I can dial is the expensive 0870 number, which I have to use my mobile because during they working hour, I will be at work as well. At one time, I was on the queue for over 50 mins, and still no one picked up the call. Yes, 50 minutes.
Within this 0870 number, I have a choice of calling the direct sales, which I did, in the hope of getting some information on how to complain, and guess what? To my surprise, when I called that number after the 50 mins wait, it says the direct sales is closed, which I was then redirect to the main menu.
I paid for the Sony Vaio computer, in hope to get a better service and better quality, but now...
Never buy any Sony Vaio Desktop.

I have the FS115Z, I too have a catch broken, a key that popped off and exactly the same memory issue. I was forced to change the 2 256MB units for 2 512MB units.
The sceen is no where near as bright and clear as my previous Sony.
Dissapointed!

can anyone give me the phone number for sony repair UK, as my left hinge has broken,
or has anyone got a website selling sony hinges for FS115B
Thanks

Spare parts for sonys can be bought unfortunately on a lead time of 7-21 days normally.
see www.sparesweb.com.
they also have schematics for some models for download, and users manuals for most.
Their tech support is free, and extremely helpfull.
Unfortunately they still have to wait on sony to dispatch most parts to them (they keep batteries and ac' in stock and special order most other parts) but they seem to have more success with their own contacts with sony than anyone else

I bought a sony vaio FS115B April '05 within 2 weeks the right catch just fell off. Took it back to Dixons, who after a long arguement replaced it. 8 months later it broke again!Does anyone know if sony have resolved this problem?
Posted by Smeg | January 8, 2006 7:29 PM
PHEW - I was JUST ABOUT to walk out of this internet shop and buy a Sony Vaio - seems one of the best value for money for the spec, and I'd expect a name like Sony to have excelent after sales service... but guess what I'm NOT going to do now!!
Ta, and good luck all...
Posted by Andrew | January 10, 2006 3:51 PM
And i thought I was the only one suffering from problems with my Sony laptop! Sony's extended 3 year warranty (or any of there aftersales for that matter) is absolutely appalling!!
I have had my Vaio for just over 3 years now and recently (well 5 months ago) dropped my laptop down the stairs. I phoned up Sony to let them know and they took it back to see what they could do. Instead of replacing the laptop (as it was seriously broken), they 'repaired' and replaced all of the parts that were broken and gave it back to me about a month and a half later. It was still broken and only half the parts were replaced. The harddrive was broken and so I couldn't even use the laptop!
So I told Sony the problem and they took the laptop back again and I have waited about 3 months for them to get the 'parts' to repair my laptop! Then when they eventually returned my laptop back to me, they forgot to give me the laptop battery and so I still can't use my laptop!!
My laptop was my only computer so I had to go through 4 months without a laptop and wasn't even offered a replacement!
Grrrrrr!!! DON'T BUY A SONY VAIO!!!!!
Thanks for reading my moan!

I purchased a Sony Vaio VGN S5XP/B at the begining of November 2005. The unit had very little use really just the looking at programmes supplied and adding a couple work related, the machine had been purchased so that when a new server and office exchange system was installed over the Christmas break I would have clean and up to date unit to be attached to the network.
On my return from holiday at the begining of December the I open it up and switched on and left it to go through its start up procedure, when I returned I noticed a small blemish like a water droplet on the screen and when touched a triangular section in the bottom right of the screen blacked out.I returned the the unit for repair and have now received a bill from Sony £344.57 for the repair. As I live alone and only me has used the machine and know that I had not dropped, banged, or miss handled in fact most of the time it has been sitting on my work desk at home I fail to see Sony can say it has been damaged by myself.
I now find my self in a catch twenty two situation, I either allow Sony to say that I am lying and that the machine was damaged by me, pay up and smile, or invent a story to my insurance company as to how it was damaged save £38.00 and have increased premiums having made a claim. Either way Sony gets paid for supplying defective equipment and the consumer loses.

I have a new Sony Vaio that has Failed (Optical drive/data transfer fail) straight from the box. The supplier refuses to take it back and Sony will only repair it (Gone for months)
The Sony Support is crap, I had to enlighten them as to what could be wrong because they were clueless.
Please anyone reading this, Never but Sony products, trust me, it is n't worth it!!

I have an FS315S bought from Sony Centre in October. A few days after I had it I noticed the # key was crooked. It was loose and could be pulled off. Told Sony Centre and was told to to phone their service centre direct. They said "what did you drop on it?" I gave them the reply you would expect and they said I'd have to pay. Evnetaully sent me instructions for how to fix it but not for the key design of the FS315S. Worked out how to fix it myself but still loose. Luckily not a fequently used key. Sony Sev ice clearly useless - will need a new keyboard and who knows how long ......... and I live in Odessa.
Having read all this I'm resigned to buying a repair from some competent professional when I get back to the UK in May.

I am sooooo glad I read this, my daughter has saved hard to get a laptop and Sony was top of the list because of reputation and spec, reputation is fast failing if they have a design fault and fob off service. Anyone got a good recommendation for a decent spec laptop for doing graphic work on?
Posted by Kim | February 1, 2006 4:20 PM
I loved Sony kit and have a TV, DVD video camera, DSC T7 etc, etc. Wife and I both bought Vaio laptops in Dec 05 (PC World). Mine would never write to DVD and the hard disc failed after 11 weeks. Sony do not want to know about my data loss. This has cost me all of the photos I took of my 15 month old daughter - the whole catalogue had been transferred from my boring but totally reliable Compaq before I sold it.
The aftersales dept is staffed by pleasant but idiotic and obstructive (apparent)retards. It is "not Sony's fault" (perhaps I fitted the cheap and nasty Hitachi hard drive then and also ensured no back up to DVD was available. Only viable way with many 20mb photo files) but they will send me the broken HD after replacement so I can pay to try and recover the data that I could not burn to DVD.They apparently take a "hard line" regarding loss of data. Buy a Sony (NOT) then you too can spend 25 minutes listening to recorded messages and canned Vivaldi before even being able to talk to an "analyst". Next they will send the shipping box to your home rather than PC World in Doncaster which is where it was agreed it would be collected from.
Never again, Sony have blown it with me, a loyal customer for 20 years. Sod 'em. Wifes Vaio has also gone down with a defective keyboard.
The equipment is unreliable and badly made, the support staff are absolute idiots and liars.
I am FURIOUS.
Posted by Steve Pidcock | February 7, 2006 4:02 PM
I echo my husbands comments above. The machine failed after 3 weeks, although it is still usable (just) it is an irritating fault. I have wasted hours on telephone calls to Sony, the support service is the worst I have ever experienced. I will never buy Sony again and will take every opportunity to apprise others of the true quality of their Vaio products. Strange thing is no other Sony product has ever been a problem - pity Sony are destroying their reputation with cheap and nasty computers. My VGN-S4M/S often refuses to write to CD or DVD. ABSOLUTE RUBBISH.
I will not buy Sony again, this is apparently the only way to register disapproval as their aftersales is deliberately obstructive and staffed by incompetents. It simply is not worth the stress- buy elsewhere.
Posted by Diane Pidcock | February 7, 2006 4:13 PM
I too have a Vaio which is my bad luck. It has been plagued with problems. I find the aftersales a joke (a bad one) Watchdog should savage them. The machine is very poor. Never again, I will stick to Compaq and Dell.
Posted by Spanish John | February 7, 2006 4:27 PM
Ditto to the above. Sony should be ashamed. Absolute cr*p. Buy a computer instead of an expensive block of cheap non-functional plastic.
Once bitten...
Posted by Jamie Q | February 7, 2006 4:30 PM
PS If you have the misfortune to have your complaint handled by one Paul Quinn just throw the machine in a skip because his abject idiocy not to mention his mendaciousness will certainly shorten your life due to stress !! They are all as useful as a trap door in a canoe.

I am gutted. Have just found all of your comments after returning my 3 day old Vaio S56 as screen has failed. I am hopeful of a speedy resolution....??? as spent some time researching and thought this was the best machine for my requirements. Really once purchased there is no choice but to hope they will fix things pronto as not in a position to fork out a whole lot more money for another one.

My Sony Vaio VGN-A517B has a crazy keyboard. The letters function ok but the punctuations are out of the world. They display something other than what is on the key. Here is the question mark, for example_. And the ampersand^. Only the comma and the full stop are appropriately placed. I sometimes spend minutes looking for the key under which the right punctuation is hiding. The keyboard colon gives me> and the semicolon<.
How can I get help.(Cant figure out where I last found the question)

Misery loves company, so enjoy yourselves.

screen has just died backlight not working, how can Sony justify this not fit for the perpose it was brought for.
Was just about to by a FS415B for myself please spread the word DO NOT BUY A SONY LAPTO!!!!!!!
Posted by C. Allwood | February 23, 2006 9:35 PM
Sony PCG GRS700 is not a bad laptop, but my screen hinges seized up while I was shutting the laptop. This caused the screws connecting the hinges to the backplate to break.
Sony took far too long to reply to the repair shop that they would only send the nuts and bolts with the backplate. Sony wanted to charge them eighty dollars for four nuts and bolts!
I got my laptop back, and am now using a coat hanger to hold up my screen until I can find an affordable and more efficient solution on my own.
I will never buy another Sony product again. My next game console will be an X-Box 360. My next laptop will be an Acer or Dell. My next digital camera will be... I dunno, but it won't be a Sony. I will encourage my friends and family to double think any sony purchases by sending them to message boards like this.

I'd bought a FS25GP six month ago from hong kong, thinking that as the largest brand name in electronics, Sony would have global warrentee like most other computer brands. Wrong... apparently you need to buy 'oversea's warrentee coverage' for your computer to be looked at outside your purchase country.
So now i'm stuck with a laptop with a shorted headphone input (thus the speakers will no longer work - turn on), and no service center will even look at it without payment first.

Yesterday was looking to buy a vaio VGN-FS415B. My daughter sent me this link to check first. Has anybody had the catch or any other problems on this model. Must admit, am rapidly going off the idea of a sony!!

I purchased a sony vaio laptop from John Lewis in April of last year, since I have had this laptop the cd/dvd rom device has broken down three times.
Before this happened one of the catches broke and they kept it for two weeks and then delivered it to the wrong address!
The first time the cd drive broke down Sony told me that they would pick up the laptop from me, fix the problem and return it to me within 10 working days.
They kept the laptop for over three weeks and when they finally returned it, they had deleted all the data on my hard drive.
The cd/dvd drive stopped working again a few weeks later and I phoned them again to repair it and pleaded with them not to delete any of my valuable information. They asked me to make a backup as they said they could no guarantee if the information would still be there when the laptop was returned. I informed them that I would not be able to make backups as the only way to do that was to use the cd drive and this was not working.
The device was returned to me in January and has now broken down again. I have only produced a few cd's in the whole period of a year and am so fed up with this product. The customer service has been absolutely terrible and I really do not what to do as the guarantee with Sony will finish in April.

We had been recommended a Sona VAIO and was at the point of purchase - but thank goodness, that's thanks to all of you for your comments. We certainly will not be purchasing a Sony VAIO.
Would appreciate if anyone has any experiences with Dell, or in fact any other make.

I think there's some psycological persuasion involved, see you think because you're paying a premium for the equipment that you're getting quality, but clearly we're not.
I have a VGN-S4mS. Beautifly to look at but crashes if it has to read a folder with more than about 50 files in it. I've also had to disable some processes to actually get it to run stable without resetting the explorer bar.
Trouble since the first day i took it our the box to descover that i had not gotten an 80gb hdd, but rather a 60gb with 20gb of unnecessary crap preloaded!

I also have the dreaded screen catch problem, both broke within a few days of each other.
My question is, is it really worth me sending this machine back for repair, and having to wait 6 weeks that some of you have had to wait?
I am also receiving BSOD once every week or so, have tried reloading windows. same problem.
Help!!
p.s. As this model is discontinued, will they replace it for a new one?

I to have a sony vaio which failled shortly after it life. The after sales was terrible so i asked to speak to a supervisor. I was told Paul was the only supervisor here and he was unavailable. So i went higher and asked for a manager. The manager a young irish lad by the name of Ian spoke to me. He was very help full and sorted my issue out. I had my laptop back in two days. He was very understanding not like the analyst whose name was dennis. So in in the end if you speak to the right person, it will be sorted asap

It is great to see that people have visited this site and given their money to corporations more deserving than Sony. All we can do is hit them in their corporate pockets. A shame some retards employed by Sony have to take the opposite view to all those who have been ripped off by the greedy mendacious degenerates within Sony computer division. I am sure it is just the computers because I have never encountered problems with any other product from Sony. Anyway because of the crap laptops and aftersales I shall fine and punish Sony by buying competitors products from now on. A pity one of their chief executives has not read and acted on this notice board - it is a disgrace and a terrible advertisement.

I used "Easy Recovery" in Northern Ireland. They managed to recover some data from my Vaio's failed hard drive. It cost me £800 plus VAT. I will be suing the fools at Sony who seem to think they are above the law. Watch this space and please buy elsewhere lest you become a victim too. Oh well what's £800? I mean the machine was 3 months old when it failed catastrophically !!

I purchased a Sony Vaio VGC-RA204 desktop which failed after about 3 months use. The power supply was dead, as I live on an island in the north of Scotland I asked them to send me a new power supply to save having to ship the unit for a 5 minute repair. They refused the PC was returned and I then received an email asking for over £400 as the computer was damaged when they received it. They say it had to be my fault as the box was undamaged. Trying to explain to them that this is untrue has proved to be a waste of time After several calls and emails to sort the matter out I am now going to my local trading standards office to see if they can help. Sony's support is a joke, look elsewhere for a computer

I'v just been looking on the sony website and in dixons and was really thinking about buying a vaio. I was looking at one with a built in camera and windows media. It looked great and the spec was top notch.
After reading these comments however, I'll have to think whether it's worth the risk!!
Dunno what else would be good though, any ideas?
Me dads got an apple power book and has had no problems with it at all!!!
Maybee I'll opt for one of those :o)

for all i know, the posts above are all from the same person having an imaginary conversation with himself.
I happen to know from more objective sources that around 95% of people have good experiences with their sony vaios. I guess it must be true that there are some idiots in sony support, as there are in Dell and any other company. Just don't go making your decisions based on what is written above.
Be sensible people. Sony bashing should be frowned upon

I must agree with u with dat, i know many people with vaios and all of which have had no problems. I have had mine for around 4 months and no problems have occured yet

I have had sony vaio laptops for 5 years now ( 3 different models) and have had no problems with them at all.
Posted by taz | March 31, 2006 9:20 AM
Having the same problem with Vaio FS195 and Sony customer service in another European country! It seems the only thing that's global about Sony is their faulty Vaios and useless aftersales services. 2 major repairs already and it's only 8 months old and only option is a third repair! No thanks - I'm calling in the legal experts now.
If nothing else, I am glad that this board is being read by people who are thinking of buying a Vaio - my advice is DON'T! Not just for the bad quality PCs but for Sony's very poor after sales service too.

Sony PCG FX8 series. I have had this Sony Vaio for 3 years. I took out extended warranty with Index. After a year the keyboard broke and had to be replaced. Then I had problems with the mouse so it had to be repaired again. Both times it was away for 5 weeks.
Last October the keyboard broke again, certain keys would not work. Index who I have the extended warranty with use a firm called Lasco. The Laptop went there as previous and they have to send it on to Sony. Sony said the keyboard was not working due to water damage. All I have ever done is wipe the keys down. The extended warrant would not pay for repair which was £327. My contents insurace paid for it under accidental damage so I had to pay £50 excess towards the repair. The laptop was returned in January to Lasco but the speakers were not working so it had to be sent back to Sony again. I eventually got it back last month. Now I have a problem with the screen. Some days it is okay, but other days it goes dim and if I move the screen slightly the light comes back on. It still has a year to go on extended warranty, but I am reluctant to send it off again as its away for ages and I do not have any other PC to go online with.
My son has had several Playstations and they eventually stop playing games and go to browser. Fortunately I have always bought them from Argos and took out extended warranty and Argos replace them with a new one straight away. We have had 2 black normal sized playstations, one silver normal size and we are now onto our seocnd slim silver playstation. We also had problems with the Playstation ones as well.

My experience with Vaio laptops is simple: if you're buying one of the "lower" price range, you're definetely are going to be disappointed sooner or later.
If you're buying one of the higher price range like the SZ1 or TX2 series, you're not going to be disappointed. We bought many Vaio laptops for the past couple of years and this has always been our experience with Vaio laptops. Vaio isn't always Vaio... ;-)

I bought what was top of the rang sony grt916z and the lcd started blinking sometime only after just 8 months. i didn't send it for check up while under warranty as i was busy and couldn't stay without a laptop even for a day. the lcd went dark over a year from time of purshase. was sent to sony for repairs and paid the £60 postage but after 2 weeks sony wouldn't tel me what's wrong with it and how much it would cost to fix the screen. other repairers told me that the back light is gone off and it would cost £700 for new screen or £400 for someone to try to repair the lcd. i'm hesitate to buy anothr sony broduct now and would advise against buying sony laptop.

So from what i can tell this complaining is not helping anyone. we're all just voicing our problems to other people who have other problems and nothing is actually getting sorted out. My bloody explorer bar has slowly lost each icon over a period of about 6 months.
REF: my last post:
Posted by: Stephen Clarke | 11 Mar 2006 06:14:32 above.
the other day i went through each bloody process to find out which programmes was causing all the destruction and narrowed the source down to 2 of sony's "neccessary programmes".
i've disabled these and from what i can tell, the only problem now is that my keyboard shortcuts(volume, etc.) don't work.
why has the software, written for the laptop and included, now decided to reject the computer, and why is it that i have to compromise on using keyboard functions just so that i can actually see what programmes are running in my windows bar.
this is insane.
PLEASE! if anyone can help, even with a support number or something. maybe a loyal sony fanatic who would like to save their prize companies reputation. this is not right. its slower than any laptop i've used and less stable than a crach addict.
Posted by Stephen Clarke | April 6, 2006 9:20 AM
To Stephen
On a fresh system these programs will not cause problems. Reason behind these processes causing issue is due to installation of new programs and Microsoft updates. Sollution is perform updates on www.vaio-link.com as sony release updates when third party s/w causes these problems. This is common on all pc's not renoundly linked to one company. Every pc manufacturer has their own s/w which can be hurt by updates

I has the letters fading on my keyboard of only 11 months old (Still in warranty) I was told repair would be chargable. I spoke to a manager
(Ian listed above also) He told me it was down to incrisiations of the fingers. Now i was not sure what this meant so he elabarted and said a build up of sweat in my hands and hence was wear and tear which not covered under warranty. I was gobsmacked but he did offer to send me out the keys of the 5 worst letters max. I was lucky there was only 4. But imagine not covered for a free repair. Im gobsmacked.

Hi,
My Sony Vaio S4M/S is about 7 months old and has already been repaired once, with a new motherboard and dvd drive. Sony now are attempting to extort at least £600 for a new screen since their old one has ceased to function through no fault of mine. I cant even get it back for a second opinion from a legitamate repairer as Sony are demanding £120 just to return it.
I really dont know what to do, it is an absolute disgrace. I am supposed to be completing my dissertation right now and i am having to handwrite everything.
Please help me someone
Posted by Paul B | April 12, 2006 4:33 PM
i'm typing this using the virtual keyboard as the actual keyboard on my s4m has failed. only had the laptop 4 months having just replaced the hard drive which crashed taking a lot of my work with it. i have been buying vaios for 6 years and this is my 4th and final vaio.
the first one looks like it has been through a war and still works fine although obviously slow.. the second lasted 2 years. the third died after just one year by which time lots of bits had snapped of it or cracked. thought that i'd give sony the benefit of the doubt but the build quality is even worse.
to give you an idea of how annoyed i am, it took me 20min to write the abovewith an onscreen keyboard and i still bothered.

Have now had 2 replacements of SZ1XP notebook, this series has a flaw with wireless driver under certain configurations which corrupts WMI and damages registry. Sony have informed me they will release a driver update but this could take upto a month or so. Will have to do a Full notebook Manufacturer Recovery for the sixth time and then install driver. Notebook is useless until then. Sony not willing to compensate or provide loan notebook even tho Professional Premium Service purchased with notebook. Have been informed this problem exists on all SZ series.
I'd recommend to avoid this series.
Posted by Az Yasin | April 20, 2006 10:11 AM
To Az
Driver corruption can occur at all levels. The best thing to prevent it is to do a complete recovery update the wireless driver (Beta version) Support team will send you this driver. Once wireless is ok remember to create a restore point prior to installing s/w etc so if you do get a corruption a simple restore will work
Posted by Ex Vaio Support Employee | April 20, 2006 12:37 PM
This driver corruption comes out of the box prior to installing any software by just using the network connections. Has occurred on 2 laptops. Have reported this problem over 3 weeks ago to Sony Premium support, waited over 2 weeks now for drivers to be posted on Sony's website, they are still in the stages of being developed. Even there not sure why its occurring. Sony cannot confirm when drivers will be available or if it will resolve problem.
Windows system recovery does not resolve this corruption and fix problem, even restoring it to the very first restore point.
Having to now go through supplier to exchange the laptop again, this time for an IBM Thinkpad X60.
Posted by Az Yasin | April 20, 2006 4:50 PM
Sony would have to state whether the problem would be resolved because if it cannot be, then a collection would need to be organised. No manufacturer can sell a product which has a defect which cannot be rectified and it never happened when i worked their. The think pad is a good laptop, very cool touchball on it

The right hand catch on my sony vgn fs115z has also snapped off - what the hell were sony thinking by making the thing out of plastic?? Does anyone know if you can just stick the little bugger back in or is there a metal replacement that you can fit yourself?
Posted by kreem | April 23, 2006 12:10 PM
I've purchased a vaio FS315s here in Belgium last November (1900 € / 1316 £). In those 5 months i owned it, it has been out for repairs for about 2 months. Accompanied by HOURS of discussions and fights on the phone and in letters to make them live up to the so called great guarantee they offer along with it.
These repairs concerned a failing screen after a month(black pixels) and a broken keyboard after 3 months (several keys out of order).
Now after having it for 5 months i have again 2 problems with it since a few weeks.
Firstly the letters on my keyboard are fading and unlike with someone who posted above they refused to even send me replacement keys. Now this is a problem i could eventually live with as it doesn't affect the thing working normally.
Secondly the headphone input is broke causing me to have no sound anymore, not even the build in speakers. Now this DOES annoy me big time. Whether this will fall under the guarantee or not will only show after having it handed in again and that is not even the issue. I just didn't feel like being without a laptop again for a month at least for a repair even if i had to pay for it and eventhough it is only hardly halfway it's guarantee period.
Though i've been fairly pleased by it's technical specifications being pretty fast, good large HD and good WLAN, i really need a RELIABLE machine to work with in the first place.
So i decided NOT to send it in again, backup and delete tons of data, mp3 and programs i don't really have a licence from and having to borrow a replacement again for the time being to be able to move on with work.
So am giving the thing away to a person who's in need of one at the moment and can have it fixed if he feels like it and went to purchase an Apple powerbook (2700 € / 1870 £) a bit ago as my desktop is already a mac anyway and which so far seems to live up to what it's supposed to do a lot better. And in the end the periods i have been without and all the hassle along with getting these (small) malfunctions fixed have cost me more than the price of a new mac really. So no more sony for me either. Would be different if a repair was actually done within just a few days and if they would understand over at sony that some people actually need the damned thing daily for purposes that enables them to be buying their crap.
So my conclusion is that the 800 € (554 £) i saved 5 months ago by buying a vaio instead of a powerbook (which by the way is more pleasant to work with, specially the faster rendering when using Photoshop or other graphic programs) ended up in having lost way more than that little gain if i concider all the trouble and lost time i had with that vaio thing. And then i don't even mention their lousy after sales service and rude and incompetent staff.
Good luck to any future vaio customers.
P.S. Why does a sony memory stick have to cost double the price of exactely the same thing from another brand, with completely no difference in quality or specifications other than it having "sony" printed on it?
Posted by Kris | April 23, 2006 11:31 PM
I have a defective SONY VGN-A195EP. The vaio was also dead piece of plastic and metal. The only thing my vaio did was the blinking charging indicator. I opened it and start demounting piece by piece. When nothing helped i put it all back together and giving it up. But luckily i forgot to plug in the connector coming from my mousepad(together with the 3LED indicators) and I pressed the power button. Guess what : it started and booted!. I turned it off and plugged the mousepad in : dead like before. So i only have to plug in an external mouse. Can someone try this too and let us know.
Posted by Quo | April 24, 2006 2:13 AM
To kreem
Laptop has to be sent away for repair. Lcd housing needs to be removed and more than likely replaced. The catch will still be plastic, but will be a stronger piece of kit than the previous one.

Catmambo you prick, how can you back up a machine that will not write to CD or DVD.
How much did Sony pay you for your small minded and facile comments ?
Posted by SpanishJohn | April 26, 2006 8:30 PM
I have read the comments from other people, and whole-heartedly agree with comments about the ridiculous customer support from Sony and their general
indifference to complaints.A month ago I ordered two extra lenses for my video camera, through a local camera dealer. Needless to say, they have not arrived ! The dealer does not know where they are, neither apparently, does the Sony centre here in Belgium. They do not reply to e-mails, or telephone calls and seem impervious to criticism. In all this time (wasted, not to mention the cost of numerous phone calls)I have spoken to twö Operatives'(IF THAT IS THE RIGHT WORD !)who both said , predictably, they would "make inquiries"and "would phone me back" Nothing, of course.Be warned. Do not waste your time dealing with Sony. THey have no interest in dealing with customers. For sheer effrontery , they have issued a " Customer Satisfaction Charter " It means nothing whatever- except a public relations exercise. And if you believe this rubbish, you'll believe anything !

I would agree with most of above. I have Sony Vaio laptop. Bought Xmas, returned March as key nos 1 fell off.
Sony tried to charge me £150 for repair arguing that laptop had been dropped. Then agreed it had not.
Now back but they have returned without wireless card!
Will not be buying Sony again.

I'm now on Sony Vaio number 4 (10 year period) and consider myself lucky that I haven't had the problems soem fo the posters have faced along the lines of; opened laptop, bits fell off! I recently tooled up with an SZ1XP. It looks the dogs bollocks and runs like a dream. One important criteria in the purchase decision was weight. Even there Sony have provided a high end laptop that weighs 1.8kg. So then what f.... mental muppet came up with the idea of shipping the thing with a power supply the size of an '80s mobile phone and weighs in at over 0.5kg and needs another 200 gram adapter to plug it in to any power socket outside the Netherlands!!!!! What planet do these people live on? Obvoiusly one without the effects of gravity that's for sure.

Spanish John, you must be having a bad couple of weeks. Did the data come on the machine when you bought it. No !! So sony can take no responsibilty for it. How to back up data with no cd /dvd drive. External writer, usb key, crossover cable. The list goes on and on

I've recently bought the flagship model SZ1VP from a Sony shop.
It is a lovely laptop with an excellent screen but the battery life comes nowhere near 6 hours even with wireless off and set up for light use.
I can say that a lot of the people posting here are not lying and have heard a lot of 'word of mouth' negative experiences about Vaio-link Europe's support. It is scarey that a premium priced brand and company can treat people like this.
Sony are paying the price with their BMG digital rights management ilegally installing softwar eon people's PC's, the delay of the PS3, the svere mauling by Apple of Sony in portable music devices with a series of flops, and finally an increasing incidence on many forums of horror tales lile the ones above.
These are not the ocassional 'Sony bashers', there is a serious modal frequency across internet blogs and even 'word of mouth' that Sony is losing the plot on its brand reputation and service quality.
Bring on the Koreans with Samsung and LG and Lenovo of China doing great things with IBM's Thinkpad laptops since they acquired the division last year.
My Vaio is going on ebay, I dread the thought of such an expensive machine going wrong and facing Sony after-sales as I use it for critical business applications. I'm off to buy a Thinkpad laptop..............................

My VAIO Notebook had the "page up" key break. I understand that they don't want to keep bins of spare keys laying around, but they wanted me to pay shipping plus $70 for an entire keyboard. They also treated me like I was a real jerk for calling. Whatever. I am happy with my Dell desktop, and I anticipate the same from my Dell laptop when I am ready for a new one. Bye-bye Sony.
Posted by john | May 18, 2006 7:54 PM
I have two Vaios: one desktop and one laptop. The desktop has given me good service for four years, but the FS570 laptop has proven a bigger pain.
As many people above have experienced, the right catch broke very soon after buying it, which I didn't bother getting fixed.
Then, after a year of otherwise problem-free service, the battery stopped re-charging. It would work on AC power with the battery removed, but as soon as the battery was introduced it died. When I took it to my local Sony service centre they said the motherboard needed replacing.
Now I'm waiting to see how long it's going to take -- it's been one week so far and they've said it will be at least another two because they don't have any of the right motherboards in stock. Fingers crossed...

Hiya, read through this and i'm afraid i also have to join in with my complaints of Sony. Had a PCG-K215Z thats been crashing for the year i've had it. When it went in for repair (under warrenty) they didnt repair it and when it went back in (just over the 1 year warrenty period, but the Sony support guy said it was an existing problem so no worries) i waited two months for them to tell me that actually they _were_ going to charge me.
Not really a comment on Sony laptops as a whole (this is my first) but definately the support basically hasnt been helpful and ultimately lied as to the status of my repair/warrenty.
If anyone has any experience in negotiating with them/positive legal action/small claims/whatever help they could offer that would be grand (jester_minute@hotmail.com)
hope you all have better luck

I've got a Sony Vaio PCG-Z1SP which I've had for about 3 years. I bought it as a backup machine and for occasional travelling. I've maybe had about 30-40 hours use of it tops. Most of the time it has just sat around. The hard disk has just failed - after 40 hours!! Seeing the comments about other people's experience makes me think that sending it back to Sony wouldn't be a cost effective option, so I'm going to try and fix it myself. Seems like it would be cheaper to buy a new laptop somewhere else.
I have no idea how I'm supposed to get my software back as everything was pre-installed and no CD backups supplied. I thought this was pretty shit at the time and I'm really regretting it now.
By the way, I used to work for Sony. Not only were their supply lines absolute crap so that supplies of Sony stuff were always late but their service department was well known for ridiculous delays.
Posted by PhiltheBear | June 8, 2006 5:15 PM
The hdd is gone not the mainboard. You can purchase one for around 50 - 70 Pounds. In regards to the software, recovery media was supplied with that unit so you should have checked with point of sale as to why you received no software media. I also worked in the vaio support dept and although there is always minor clitches nothing to really validate these complaints

I wish I'd read these comments before buying this piece of crap. I bought a PCG-7G1m laptop, after only 3 months the space bar jammed (through normal use)My daughter who is an adult (although Sony tried to refer she was a child)simply attempted to release the bar by placing her finger nail under it. It immediately popped off and snapped.
After sending it back to Sony, and several rows with them, they have decided that it was wilfull damage or an accident, and that we should not have attempted to release the bar. They will only replace the space bar at £145.00 or the keyboard for £179.00.
I asked the girl dealing with my case if she was on a PC whilst talking to me, which she confirmed yes she was, I the asked if a key jammed now would she stop and pack the PC up and send off for repair. She agreed she would try to release it first.
I told them to stuff themselves, luckily I am covered by my contents insurance, and awaiting return of my PC. This has taken nearly 4 weeks to get to this point.
Obviously this is a standard policy by Sony to disregard any claims, and if possible cash in on customer's woes.
Anyone reading these reviews would be nuts, should they choose a Sony now.
Shit service, hardnose customer service policy and total disregard for customer.

My Vaio is a lovely bit of kit, however I had a problem with the keyboard and it took the support at Vaio Link 3 weeks to respond. It appears that if you want your laptop fixed in the UK you are stuffed. Eventually I ordered a replacement keyboard from the US and replaced it myself. No doubt this will invalidate the warranty but from what I've read above and my own experiences it is not worth contacting them. My previous laptop was a Dell and although I am not a big Dell fan, I think sony could learn an awful lot from dell support. When I had a similar problem with my Dell the keyboard was fixed within 4 days.
In summary: buy elsewhere.

I have had the screen latches on my VAIO FS-70B break twice. Once in Japan where the service was superior, where they send a courier to your house, box it up, send it to Sony where they take 1 day to replace the part and send it back to you. FOC btw. Second time in australia out of warranty. Sony Australia official service wants $180AUD (roughyl 9 pounds) to fix it. Its utterly BS and you would be stupid to pay for it. I ordered two spares of the clip from the Australian Sony Spare Part dealer for only $50AUD. It takes 4 screws off from the LCD bezel and a gentle unclip to reach the broken parts. From there unsrew two more screws holding the broken pieces to the screen. EASY. If you accidentally snap the bezel it cost $106AUD to replace with makes a total price of $156AUD even if you totally stuff up.
What is utter BS is what Sony is charging for a replacement of the rubber feet. $45AUD EACH!!!!

Sounds Like Sony's aftersales stinks...I have had similar problems with HP, Acer and Toshiba...and Lacie...never buy a lacie hard drive unless you want to loose your data!!
Simple solution and cheaper than a warranty....Put the machine on your home contents accidental damage insurance and then drop it!
Then do a hunt around for who ever is supplying the best tech support at the time as they all go up and down.....Same applies to build quality and machine spec...take nothing for granted and do your research before buying....Check the reviews...i wish i had in the past and now i do..I win now!

I bought a valio because it was sony and id read all the write ups. I had it six months the power went it went again after another sixmonths so i said to sony that there must be a problem. No they said it was under guarrentee The power has gone again its out of warranty and now ive been told its unrepairable. I wouldn never have a sony product again. Im currently sending their 1600.00 television back as i dont feel i can trust them anymore regards les

SONY VAIO FS MODELS SUCK, SUCK, SUCK, SUCK, SUCK!!! I've had mine for 1 week. The resolution quality sucks, it sometimes does not wanna shut off, it's slower than a slug and on certain programs takes up 100% CPU usage!!! COME ONE!!! DAMN!!! Oh, I spent $1100 dollars on it!!! They had better damn well take this trash back because I refuse to send something brand spanking new to be repaired- so stupid!!!!
Posted by TRINA | August 7, 2006 11:53 PM
Sony Vaio laptops suck. Mine has had to be repaired 6 times. I have written to consumer rights and the relevent authorities to discuss compensation, since Sony have been very unfair and contradictory in this whole matter. Dont worry guys, in a few years time, NO ON WILL BUY SONY VAIOS. Those idiots will realise the power of the people soon enough.
Posted by Steve | August 12, 2006 10:12 PM
I had a Dell P3 500mhz Inspiron from 1997 that was SOOOO much better than the new VAIO VGN-FS742/W. The Dell was FAST. Hell I thought the Sony would be faster- given that it is a 2006 machine but it truly is a PIECE OF SHIT! Looks GREAT but that is it's ONLY good attribute. I'd like to shove it way on up the ass of the moron that approved this product for release. And from what I have seen on this and other postings, mine is not the only crap model. Sony only has a good name for the old Trinitron TV's they built and even they had poorly soldered circuit boards. Their older Walkmans (especially the models sold in Japan) were cool but newwer models are shit too.
DON'T BUY ANYTHING SONY! They do not deserve YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!

Hi there
NEVER EVER BUY SONY PRODUCTS
Bought a Sony laptop, rearely used then had to send away as hard drive had to be replaced, when it returned usb ports didn't work so had to send back again, this time they want £560 to fix the problem!!! Unbelievable rudeness, intimidation and reduced me to tears. Just been diagonosed with a serious illness and do not know if I have the strength to fight the poor after sales team at Sony I have several Sony products and always buy Sony so was very shocked at their appalling attitude.
NEVER BUY SONY AGAIN

I bought a Sony Vaio VGN SZ 17NPC in Dubai, the equivalent to the VGN SZ1
Shortly after the purchase one small leaflet fell on the Windows key of the keyboard, slipped it off and destroyed one of the two white, featherlike clips, which support the key´s elastic function.
Up to now It was not possible to purchase such a clip via regular ways.Sony proposed to exchange the whole keyboard instead of sending this small 10:5:0.5 mm white clip to me. I think that this is similar to fake or betraying the client like robbering knights in the medieval centuries.
Perhaps somebody can help me and has a clue of where to get such clips.
